Tapoco is situated on 120 acres in the lush mountain region of the Nantahala National Forest on the banks of the cascading Cheoah River. Adventures like hiking, rafting, kayaking, fishing mountain biking, and winding hilly roads are plentiful, and after your day of adventure, experience sanctuary with riverside dining, a nap in hammock cove, evening fire pits, and beautiful places to rest.
Perched on the banks of the world famous Cheoah River, Tapoco Tavern combines the very best of a classic pizzeria and all American flavors with a view and environment unmatched in all of Western Carolina.
We have been to Tapoco to eat probably about 20 times in the past year. Not only is it a perfect stop after driving The Dragon, the entire atmosphere will make you want to never leave. It is absolutely amazing to sit along side the river and listen to the water roll over the rocks. In the evening, the table top fire pits come on. There's also indoor seating with a bar. The entire property is snuggled up between the rolling hills and mountains. Just gorgeous to sit and take in. Now... We've gotta discuss the food because IT IS INCREDIBLE! All of it! They have the absolute best gluten-free pizza crust!!! I'm sure the regular pizza is just as tasty. The meat-lovers pizza is the absolute best... it's because of the bacon!!! OMG I don't even like meat, but I'd eat that all day every day. The chicken wings are the best we've ever had. I do not know if they marinate them, but the taste is unique and sooooo good. The garlic Parmesan ones are mouth-watering!! Next, we gotta bring up the burgers... perfectly custom cooked, great grilled flavor and great seasoning. I'm super happy that they'll accommodate my request for a lettuce "bun" instead of the bread. Keto friendly! Yes!! Oh and totally not Keto, but again the best I've ever eaten, the sweet potato fries are topped with sugar!! They are like dessert!!! Speaking of dessert, that is the one thing they could maybe improve only because they don't make their cakes in-house. We absolutely LOVE Tapoco Tavern!! I seriously want to live here or at least work here. Everyone that does work here is so incredibly nice. I mean, I'm going on and on and can't say enough positive!! Come and enjoy it!!
"Staff was very friendly and professional. Location is incredible. Made use of the many outside sitting areas either watching over a fire ring or the beautiful river running the length of the property. We stayed in one the rustic cabins. Very comfortable and inviting. Dinner was great sharing one of awesome brick oven pizzas."
"Beautiful historic lodge! Caters to motorcyclists. Covered parking, bike wash, etc. The food is awesome and has a full bar! Outdoor seating along beautiful stream, fire pit tables and very friendly staff."
"This was the perfect quiet getaway after an intense wedding season! We stayed here right after we got our daughter married and was able to process the wedding and enjoy a couple of days of peace and quiet! Comfortable beds, beautiful scenery, and great hosts."
"My wife and I had the opportunity to stay at Tapoco Lodge with friends last week. We arrived on a Thursday morning and left Friday afternoon. The location is amazing - the drive-in was shorter than expected and a beautiful drive! Coming from Knoxville we did use 129 and of course, there were alot of motorcycles out, so drive carefully across and stay in your lane! The lodge is gorgeous! The appointments are what you'd expect from a 5 star resort. More on this later. Lunch the first day at the Tapoco Tavern was AMAZING! We sat on the patio overlooking the river and enjoyed the view and sounds as we had lunch. I had "The Stella", a chicken sandwich that was FANTASTIC! One of our friends got the tacos - and while I was hesitant about a trout taco at first it was delicious! There's only ONE SIDE you HAVE to order, and it's the sweet potato fries! They are waffle-style and instead of salt are seasoned with sugar and cinnamon. While I admit I was hesitant to try them at first they quickly became my favorite item on the menu! While I had some business to attend to my wife was able to enjoy the grounds and one of the FIVE trails they have around the property. We reconnected with everyone for dinner and that was another memory making experience. There were three couples and we split the Tapoco Chips, Trout Nuggets, and Onion rings for starts. WOW! I can't tell you which I enjoyed more, the Chips or the Nuggets! They were so good! For the main course, I had the trout filet while most of the rest of the table split a pizza. My fish was amazing as was the mac and cheese, and the pizza I tasted was fantastic as well! It was someone's birthday so we also got some dessert - the carrot cake, tiramisu, and peanut butter pie. The carrot cake was my favorite - it was served warm with a caramel drizzle and cream cheese frosting. We stayed in the Laural room in the main lodge. The bed was great, and I'm picky on beds! The bathroom's retro style still had the modern amenities I'd expect. My wife really enjoyed the oversized jacuzzi tub! Breakfast is typically a buffet style but the day we were there they were doing a menu instead. I had the avocado toast with eggs and it was also great! I could tell you more about the overlook trail and the amazing views of the dam from the top. I could tell you about the beautiful walks along the river and the chairs on the upper patio that overlook it. But more than all of that, far and away the highlight of Tapoco Lodge is the STAFF! They are AMAZING! Each person we interacted with from the team checking us in, the wait staff, the retail team, EVERYONE went out of their way to accommodate us and make us have a memorable time. Not in the annoyingly cheesy way, but with a sincere desire to serve us well. Whether you're looking for a great vacation retreat, a weekend getaway, a corporate gathering, a family reunion, or a great stop while hitting the dragon - Tapoco Lodge is THE place to stop and stay. It's now my go-to lunch stop when I hit the dragon, and my wife and I are already looking at dates to book our next getaway there! Try it once, you'll find your new "happy place!" "
This past Friday was our fourth incredible visit. The grounds, facilities, staff, events, & food are just the best. On this visit, we stayed in one of the cabins. Same top-notch accommodations. The updated Tavern restaurant area has added what was already a marvelous place to dine to exquisite dining in a setting that would be hard to beat anywhere. We HIGHLY recommend this Lodge!
The beauty of the Smoky Mountains and the river are equaled by this cozy jewel. The food, service, atmosphere, and accommodations were extraordinary and exceeded expectations. The staff were attentive and exuded southern hospitality without being underfoot. We will definitely return.
Wife and I and friends stayed at Tapoco this past weekend. Our mode of travel was a motorcycle. The Tapoco is a great destination for bikers. They offer the best parking arrangement for motorcycles that I have ever seen. Food is wonderful. The restaurant offers a large outdoor patio on the bank of a mountain stream, which runs beside the lodge. We plan to go back every year!
My wife and I just returned home from two days at Tapoco. We cannot say enough about the wonderful atmosphere, accommodations, staff, and lodge managers/owners. A beautiful setting on the Cheoah. The Rhododendron suite is fabulous. If you want a great experience and want to relax, refresh, and renew then the Tapoco is perfect. We plan to go back.
The perfect setting along the roaring Cheoah River! The historic lodge has been tastefully renovated with every modern convenience, yet retained its historic ambiance. Our cabin was so very clean and beautifully decorated. The food at the Tapoco Tavern was delicious, and the view is amazing! Would recommend the lodge to all! We will be back soon!!
Tapoco Lodge went above and beyond our expectations. The food was delicious, service and the room and patio area were amazing! I would like to thank you again for making our night unforgettable! Everyone had so much fun...we are thinking about doing it again next year!
Could not have asked for a better way to spend a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend with family. The lodge was elegantly decorated for Christmas with romantic vistas overlooking a scenic river. My wife and I stayed two nights in the Rhododendron Suite located on the third floor of the lodge, which was ideal for the restful getaway that we expected. This is our 4th time to stay at Tapoco, and it gets better each time. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway!
Quaint, relaxing, well-furnished, great food, and a very pleasant stay. We stayed in one of the larger and more well-appointed cabins. This was our second stay and we will be back many more times!
